Who Destroyed Historical Emek Theatre
The iconic Emek movie theatre, built in 1924, was the epicenter of Taksim’s cultural scene. Despite many protests, the historic venue - a public property - was demolished in 2013 by Kamer construction company owned by Turkmall Holding to make way for a shopping and entertainment complex called ‘Grand Pera’. Who is Behind the Soma mine massacre
On May 13th in 2014, an explosion at a coal mine in the western town of Soma killed 301 workers and wounded 162. Turkey has the highest number of worker fatalities in Europe and the world's third-highest in 2012, according to the International Labor Organization (ILO). The firm operating the mine has also constructed a luxurious highrise called 'Spine Tower'.
Hydroelectric Power Plants - A Dispossession of Rivers
In 2001, with an amendment to the Turkish Electricity Market Act, the government started to lease the ‘usage rights’ of rivers for 49 years to private companies for the sole purpose of producing electricity. These hydropower plants - abbreviated as ‘HES’ in Turkish - allow the companies to suck the life out of even the smallest rivers.
The firm behind plans to demolish historic Tarlabaşı and Fener-Balat neighbourhoods
GAP Holding, who is CEO is Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s son-in-law, took the public tenders to demolish and rebuild the historic neighborhoods of Tarlabaşı and Fener Balat. Both projects include forced evictions and were sued by local resistance groups. Courts have decided in favor of the residents, however hundreds of historic buildings have already been torn down by the company.
